Category: HRC's Events

The 5TH round of the Cyclo Cross North East League took place in Arctic conditions at Croft Motor Racing Circuit on the 03/01/2010.

The event organised by Hambleton Road Club/Cowley Cycles Race Team attracted a top quality field including several medal contenders for the upcoming National Championships held in Sutton Coalfield.

The senior race started at a frantic pace with Stephen Ward (MTS Cycles-Inbuild) taking an early lead from Paul Oldham from the Hope Factory Racing Team, closely followed by Keith Murray also of Hope Factory Racing Team, Stuart Wearmouth and Malcolm Lewis both riding for MTS Cycles. As the race progressed the riders battled through freezing temperatures, snow and ice, demonstrating incredible riding skills. Paul Oldham took command of the race on the 2nd of 11 laps and continued to pull away to take a convincing win from Stephen Ward. A frantic battle behind the leading pair saw Stuart Wearmouth claim 3rd place in front of Keith Murry and Malcolm Lewis with Pete Middlehurst taking 6th place. Several members of the promoting club rode with Darren Binks the highest place finisher in 9th place, Richard Atkinson 12th and race organiser Steve Middleton finishing a creditable 17th after coordinating the day’s races.

Other riders from Hambleton Road/Cowley Cycles race team finished the race with Nigel Wilkinson in 23rd, Paul Roberts in 29th, Darren Gladwin in 31st and Neil Turner making his cyclo Cross debut riding a full suspension mountain bike !

Adam Martin of the Active Cycles-Fentimens Cycle Race team took an easy win in the youth race and looks to be in fine form for the National Championships.

Race organiser Steve Middleton was please with the outcome of the event despite the challenging conditions. There had been question marks over the running of the event due to the weather; however, Steve persevered with the organisation and was determined to run the event as planned after having to cancel a major Road Race in April 2009 due to unnecessary interference from a local Safety Advisory Group.

HRC Circuit Race – Raf Leeming – 26/07/09

Category: HRC's Events

A top class field of 70 of the regions most talented cyclist assembled for the inaugural running of the circuit race at RAF Leeming on Sunday 26th July. The race, jointly organised by Northallerton based Cycling club, Hambleton Road Club and RAF Leeming was contested over 13 laps of a challenging 4 mile circuit around the air field at RAF Leeming, covering 52 miles in total. Despite the rain and strong blustery wind the race started at a frantic pace with Malcolm Lewis of the Deli Baps Cycle Race Team attacking on the first lap to open a gap on the chasing bunch. As the race progressed Malcolm dropped back to the peleton which in turn led to several counter attacks from other riders. A Group of 6 riders formed after the 3rd lap which included some of the strongest riders in the race, Shaun Tyson, Dominic Munnelly, Damian Sharp, James Alder, John Tuckett and Tony Glover worked well together to open a commanding lead of over a minute. The Peleton chased the break and reduced the gap to 10 seconds with 5 laps remaining; this allowed John Davidson Chris Clark, Michael Dales and Blah Di Blah to bridge the gap to the leaders. The riders that jumped the gap initiated some new energy into the break that increased the gap on the peleton back up to 45 seconds at the bell lap. The 10 riders fought out the race over the last lap, however, the final results was decided by a sprint finish with James Alder, MTS Cycle sport, taking the win from Shaun Tyson of the Adept Precision Race Team with Damian Sharp, West Yorkshire Police, Finishing 3rd ahead of Dominic Munnelly of the KB Cycles Race Team.

Hambleton Road Race 19/04/2009

Category: HRC's Events

With regret and bitter disappointment I am forced to cancel the 2009 Hambleton Road Race.

I was invited to a meeting with the local Safety Advisory Group on Tuesday 07th April 2009. The conclusion of this meeting was that the race/s can only proceed with a road closure order and Police Motorbike outriders to implement a “rolling road closure” costing £2500.

I am deeply disappointed to cancel the races; however, with such a short time scale to work with I have no real option but to cancel. I have tried to find additional funding, and have worked closely with the Police to find an alternative solution, unfortunately this has not happened.

Ultimately I aim to get the Hambleton Road Race back on the calendar in 2010. I will also continue to work with the Safety Advisory Group to help secure the future of road racing in the region.
